UDIN – Verification of CA in Practise
Introduced by ICAI, the concept of UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) was placed to bring a mark of authentication to documents, which were manually attested and approved by professionals practicing Chartered Accountancy in India.
UDIN is an 18 digit unique secure ID, use of which is mandatory whenever a CA certifies a document or certificate.
Adding a compulsion ground for usage of UDIN, ICAI notified ‘ all professionals practicing CA in India, holding a full-time Certificate of Practise (CoP) have to mandatory apply for UDIN to self-certify documents/certificates after 1st February 2019. Non-adherence to which will attract strict penal provisions from the institution.
- UDIN is totally secure and is permissible to be viewed only by members/stakeholders/regulators registered with the UDIN portal.
- UDIN is represented by a unique 18 digit number – inclusive of first 2 digits for the current year, next 6 digits for ICAI membership number and 10 digits representing randomly generated alpha-numeric ID by the system.
- UDIN can be used for certification of reports /documents/certificates self-approved by CA – including guidance reports, certificates for Special purposes, audit reports, limited review reports, etc.
- UDIN can be generated without uploading of any document.
- UDIN can be applied at the time of the signing of the document.
How to Register and Generate UDIN?
Step 1: Go to the official webpage of ICAI to apply for UDIN located at https://udin.icai.org/ and click on ‘Member Registration‘.
Step 2: On registration page enter ‘SIX digit membership numbers, DOB (Date of Birth), and year of enrollment.
Step 3: Enter Mobile And Email and Click ‘Verify OTP’.
On verification of OTP, the Username and Password would be sent to registered email and mobile number. To generate UDIN one has to log in with the details provided and enter further necessary details of the document to obtain UDIN online.

Cancellation / Revocation of UDIN
UDIN can be revoked by mentioning the reason therein. If the UDIN is relocated, the system at any time during the search of the revoked UDIN will show the narration of the reason for revocation.
Consequences for Non- Compilation of UDIN
Certification of documents with UDIN is mandatory as per stated orders of the Council of ICAI. Non-adherence to any stated rule or provision of UDIN will attract strict disciplinary proceedings against such person found in default (as stated in the Second Schedule Part 2 of the Chartered Accountants Act 1949).
